The mission of Academic Magnet High School is to "challenge each student, teacher, and parent with high academic expectations." Academic Magnet High School offers a majority of honors and advanced placement classes. Each student must complete an independent research project in their junior and senior years. Students' work has been published in professional and academic journals. Students have access to wireless internet in the cafeteria as well as in each of the three computer labs on campus.

Charleston was founded in 1670 as Charles Town, honoring King Charles II, at Albemarle Point on the west bank of the Ashley River (now Charles Towne Landing) but relocated in 1680 to its present site, which became the fifth-largest city in North America within ten years.
